This quick guide will help you set up your return and donation workflow so you can start processing returns and giving products a second life.
Before anything else — have you installed our app?
👉 Install it here on Shopify
Once installed, you’ll have access to your ReturnsDirect dashboard, where you can start setting up your return process and donation settings.
Collections are how your products are organized and linked to donation categories.
Map each Shopify collection to a category type.
Flag collections that require delivery trucks if all items in that collection need special handling.
This ensures items are matched efficiently for donations.
Return Reasons capture why customers are sending items back.
Create detailed reasons beyond Shopify’s defaults, e.g., Torn Seam, Wrong Color, Print Defect.
Map each reason to Shopify’s return reasons for integration.
Decide if an image upload is required for verification.
Workflows automate how returns are handled.
Define rules based on order amount, collections, or return reasons.
Set outcomes, such as refunding the original payment, charging for shipping, or donating the item.
Automate repetitive decisions and keep returns consistent.
Return Policies define your store’s rules for returns.
Set the return window (days) and default messages for customers.
Apply rules based on product (SKU, collection, tags) or order (order tag, order date)
This ensures customers know exactly how returns work and what’s allowed.
Make your portal look and feel like your brand.
Enable your return portal and choose features like FedEx pickup or unboxed item returns.
Customize colors, logos, and optional background images.
Set up email branding: Use the basic editor for text changes or advanced editor for images, links, and rich content.
Choose which emails are sent and who receives them.
If your store sends returns to warehouses:
Add your warehouse locations as destinations.
Map which states or regions send returns to each destination.
This ensures items go to the right place automatically.
Start simple: Map your main collections, create key return reasons, and set up basic workflows first.
Test the portal: Make sure a return flows smoothly from start to finish
Keep it organized: Review your collections, workflows, and policies regularly.
Ask for help: Our support team is here if you get stuck or want guidance.
